Alpha Destination School

Noel and the kids have been going once a week to a school in a poor compound to read books and Bible stories to the Zambian children in grades preschool, one and two. The school is a two room cinderblock building and other than a few posters on the walls and some benches, the teachers have nothing. They have no books or curriculum or chalk boards. . .nothing but a passion for education and a vision to provide an education for the poorest children in Lusaka.

Here are some pictures:

Is it a government-run school? Private? Christian? Is there an easy way for us to get them some chalkboards?

Sally - If a Zambian has been to school, they speak English. At this school, the teachers have to translate into Nyanja when we are reading. We'll be starting our language learning in March.

I am curious as to what and how they teach. Is it things like saying the alphabet and numbers and the children reciting? Do they learn to write (seems it would have to be with sticks in the dirt)? Sing songs? It reminds me of books I have read on schooling in the US back in the 1600-1700s. -skm

I sponsor a Worldvision child, an orphan, in Zambia and I often wonder if it does much good. Have you any perspective on this? Is there a better way or another way to help these poorest of the poor?
