A woman in her mid-80s yesterday allegedly crash-landed in Ndola’s Chifubu township.
The woman who is a suspected witch is alleged to have crash-landed around 05:00hrs on Dongwe road where she was found lying naked.
A mob of Chifubu residents descended on her and beat her severely but police officers and a traditional healer, identified as Idah Chewe, rescued her.
The woman was later taken to Chifubu police station where she was questioned before being referred to the social welfare department.
The woman who identified herself as Gertrude Makasa of Chituntama village in Chief Chikwanda’s area in Mpika district, said she was ‘flying’ using a magical plane from her village near Chilonga Mission Hospital along with her granddaughter and another person she could not identify, when she crashed to the ground. She said the other two on the ‘plane’ continued with their journey adding that she did not know where they were at the moment.
The woman narrated that they got lost on their way to Ndola to see a relative when the accident happened.
She also blames her late husband for giving her the charms before he died saying she got involved in witchcraft when she got married.
And Copperbelt Province cultural officer, Raphael Mulenga, said the social welfare would try to locate the relatives so that the old woman could be taken back to Mpika as soon as possible.
By 14:30hrs, the woman was still at the social welfare department offices and authorities were in the process of handing her back to the police for safety.
